Architects have the obligation of understanding spaces and how people live in these! Building are not object dropped into the landscape or a city. Any designed object is part of a big picture: the environment we are living in, i.e. natural environment, built environment, social relations....
We 'should' be trained to understand how human beings perceive proportion, color, material, and which implication these are on their life, from the scale of chairs to the scale of towns.
It is not an easy task but we 'should' be trained to assist the community in understanding how human's activities are related with the physical environment.....if not we need to reconsider the title "architect".
The reason I have studied two millennium of urban planning process is to see cities designed on the human scale, on the relation of the human activities, on the understanding of feeling that the urban space will generate!
